Different Perspectives

Different Perspectives IAP is a wonderful time here at MIT, where the month of January is transformed into a mix of adventures, innovation, and learning.  I am spending my IAP with my head in the books, trying to absorb as much information as I can in my training to become an EMT.  Here are some of my friends descriptions of their IAPs in their own words. Dalia L. 16 Mechanical Engineering When I was a freshman, I filled up my IAP with so many activities that it became legitimately stressful. This year, as a sophomore in mechanical engineering, I made a point to have a more relaxing IAP while still doing activities that interest me. I decided to spend the first three weeks of IAP at MIT, and the last week at home. Over the past few weeks I’ve been doing a bit of this and a bit of thatâ€"like Michael C. ’16, I did both 2.670 and UPOP (my UPOP table had the best team spirit!). I’ve also been teaching Hebrew! MIT has a great culture of sharing and teaching, and it’s especially prevalent over IAP. I teach Hebrew for fun and as a way to give back to the community. Last year I helped out Inbar Y. ’15 with teaching the class, but this year I’ve been on my own. MIT Hillel sponsors the class, but it’s open to anyone in the MIT community and is especially useful for anyone planning on doing MISTI Israel. In one of the recent classes we watched Ushpizin, a great Israeli movie. And one of my students went out and bought Israeli snack food, so we even had delicious snacks to go along with our movie. Afterwards… well, afterwards I gave them a vocabulary quiz. (I’m not a mean teacher, though!) And that’s my IAP in a nutshell! Hebrew students hard at work on their vocab quizzes! Photo taken by Dalia L. 16. Marvin R. 16   Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Im doing two activities for this IAP. The first of which is a swim class, so I can finally get the swim requirement out of the way. The other is being one of the two chairs for Bad Ideas. The swim class has proven to be fun. Im able to float and swim on my back now, so thats great! Though I have to work a little more on swimming on my stomach, Im getting there. I wont have to worry about swimming later now! This year marks the 12th year of Bad Ideas. Bad Ideas is an annual event held towards the end of IAP each year. This year itll be the 24th-26th of January, happening now. Its a weekend where students can come and relax and enjoy some of the more questionable activities that people have concocted. There are annual traditions that happen such as the Wings Eating competition (kicks off Bad Ideas) and the Green Building Challenge (run up and down the Green Building as many times as you can). But there are also events that people propose that are brand new. Some of this years proposals include Quadcopter Target Practice, Smoothie Roulette, and Wife Carrying! There are many more events thatll happen, too! I really like being Bad Ideas chair. It can be a little stressful, but it does seem like itll pay off. My favorite moment so far was when my co-chair (Michael E. 2015) and I bought 60 feet of sausage. The store didnt actually believe that we were serious! It was a pretty magical place. My best advice? If youre taking swim during IAP and you can afford to do so, stay indoors until you completely dry off. Marvin and I organized the Green Building Challenge together! Here we are at the top of the Green Building stairs waiting to serve the champions Gatorade. Emma S. 16 Mechanical Engineering A majority of my time this IAP was spent in lab at my UROP. I work at the Computational Fabrication Group in CSAIL designing and fabricating mechanical assemblies using 3D printing technologies. As a mechanical engineer in a computer science lab, Im relied on heavily for my fabrication abilities. SIGGRAPH, the biggest output for all the research done in the Computational Fabrication Group, has paper submissions due midway through January every year. The opportunity to submit to SIGGRAPH only comes once a year, so the time leading up to it is quite hectic. Everyone in the lab was working hard all month in hopes of submitting a paper that would potentially be accepted at SIGGRAPH. The SIGGRAPH deadline made me a ghost. I essentially lived in my lab, coming home to my dorm at 5 oclock in the morning a couple of times. The day before the deadline I didnt even go home, and was in lab for 29 hours straight! Now this sounds like my IAP was quite miserable, but in all reality I have had a great time. All those late nights working were a personal choice, and I was in no way obligated to work that much. I ended up joining a lot of different projects in the lab that needed my help, and as a result will be an author in numerous papers! A long with UROPing all the time, I also participated in MITOC winter school. Ive always loved the outdoors, but never really did any winter hiking before. Winter school provided me with the amazing opportunity to learn winter survival skills, and the ability to go on trips every weekend. So far Ive gone on a trip every weekend this IAP. Last weekend I summited the Wildcat mountains in New Hampshire and learned how to ice climb! It was a lot of fun, and Im excited for my trip this weekend. My friend Michael C. 16 and I are finally going on a trip together, and well be camping and hiking above tree line. Michael C. 16 wrote a really great post  about winter school that describes a lot more about it, and I highly recommend reading it. Hopefully hell write a post about our epic trip this weekend. Next week Ill be participating in UPOP, and I also took a Top Roping PE class. All in all, my IAP has been a lot of fun. To anyone considering UROPing all IAP, I say go for it! You dont have to put in as much time as I did, and you can even get paid for your work! Im really lucky in that I get paid to have fun and learn, and I think the UROP program provides an amazing opportunity. Ive learned a lot about my limits in terms of work and outdoors ability, and really you can do anything you set your mind to! Emmas pictures from Winter School: Vicki C. 16   Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Over IAP, Im trying to get out of debt. Im working full time in a robotics lab at UMass Lowell; Im working to port some old code for an automated wheelchair into the standard system that the rest of my lab uses. Over the past week I learned a ton about build systems, which take many different files of code and link them together. Im also working full time in the STEP Lab on campus here, where Im helping to design edX class modules about videogames and education. Additionally, Im working part time doing web development for a small business owner in California! Ive never used Django before, and theres definitely a bit of a learning curve. Im taking a robotics class, 6.270, where you build and automate a lego robot to complete a task. The competition this year involves collecting rings and placing them onto the two towers in the center of the field. My team is all girls, so were going to get an Arwen lego figurine to stand at the head of our robot (Shes the ONLY female lego minifig from LotR!). Lastly I have odds and ends: Im volunteering with the local Girl Scouts, and am working with girls doing their Gold Award projects. Im learning to ice skate for PE credit (Im from Texas.I never got to learn as a kid!). And even though theres snow on the ground here, Im starting to apply for summer jobs. I really enjoy each of the things that Im doing, but I wish that I had more time (and brainpower) to spend on each of them. That being said, Im really heavily weighting my work hours into IAP for a reason. Ive learned in the past that its not realistic to work more than twenty-five hours in addition to taking classes during the semester. I miss sleep a lot now, but at least it means that my grades wont suffer for it over term, AND I can still afford to eat! Valentina C. 16   Mechanical Engineering Three things: UROP, poetry, and a wedding. After convincing my parents of the academic value of being at MIT over IAP, I left warm Miami for blizzard blown Cambridge; strange choice maybe, but I wasn’t lying about the academic value. For 20 days I worked hard at my UROP with the Little Devices Lab at MIT on a new project involving diagnostics. Not only did I get more done then I ever thought I could, but I taught myself a few new skills which had been on my to-do list since getting to MIT. It’s a pretty good way to start off the New Year. However, it’s not just hard work all the time. IAP though a great opportunity to learn and work is also a perfect time to give a little love to interests that may be a bit neglected during semester. This IAP I’ve pushed myself to write more poetry and though most of them aren’t quite ready yet, it’s a good start. I mentioned above working for 20 days and this is because I only spent 20 days in Cambridge; I spent the rest of IAP in Nicaragua, which is where my family is from. It’s not the most urban of countries but it has some of the most beautiful natural landscapes. Just from the plane you can see crater lakes left behind by volcanoes and luscious forests. It’s been almost 2 years since I last visited which is also how long it’s been since I’ve seen most of my familyâ€"it’s about time. My first cousin is getting married and she’s one of the more exciting characters in my family (already an energetic bunch to begin with) so the wedding is sure to be a hoot! As much as I love MIT, so much as to beg my parents to send me there prior to our trip to Nicaragua, it’s also important to take breaks which is why I’m grateful to be able to spend a couple weeks before semesters rolls around again relaxing, being with family, and sleeping… a lot. Lauren S. 16   Mechanical Engineering During IAP, I am taking a class on programming in Python. Its a lot of work but really useful, plus itll make next semesters classes easier. I am learning a lot of useful fundamental skills that apply to many languages, as well as syntax/practices unique to Python. My advice for people who want to take classes during their IAP is to make sure you check out the IAP listings as soon as they get posted and make a note of all the lottery deadlines. I missed almost all of the lotteries last year, so I didnt get into most of the classes I wanted and ended up having a fairly boring IAP. This semester, I was also able to get back into taekwondo after a short hiatus during fall semester, work on a few personal projects that got neglected during term, hang out with friends at other Boston colleges who I dont get to see too often, and sleep aggressively. IAP is the best time of year! I am so excited for Bad Ideas. As you can tell, my friends are having a lot of really great experiences during IAP, and it varies even more from theirs. There are people doing externships in other states and countries or saving the world doing volunteer work on campus or off campus.  There are so many opportunities for people during IAP at or through MIT, and as Valentina C. 16 told me, MIT students shouldnt let their parents or other people guilt them out of having a great IAP. IAP is not a real break it is a time to take advantage of the opportunities at MIT that you normally would not get to do during the semester. So our advice to you is to spend your IAP having fun or taking an awesome class.  It is completely worth it. On a final note, someone came home for IAP. DERP CAT IS BACK!!

The academic year kicked off with a speech from the Head of New Business Ventures at Rovio, producers of the hugely successful Angry Birds. Shalom Thang enthralled students with tales from his 12 year experience on the global business scene, charting his career path from Coca-Cola to Rovio in China which he said was the only region where â€Å"you not only have the opportunity to propose where the new office should be, but to also launch a new product with the Prime Minister; while sharing the exciting story of Angry Birds and Bad Piggies†. Chief Economist, Editorial Director and now Managing Director for the Economist Intelligence Unit, Robin Bew created a great deal of excitement when he visited the Shanghai campus. After almost 20 years with The Economist Group, Robin advises some of the biggest names in business on global trends and developments and inputs directly into their strategy. Hearing his insights on China’s economy firsthand was a privilege our students won’t forget in a hurry. It’s not just the big occasions that attract the big names to Hult Shanghai. Our Brown Bag Seminar Series sees faculty members and local experts offer an in-depth look into Chinese and Asian markets over a ‘brown bagged’ lunch. McKinsey Co. Director, Jonathan Woetzel, dropped by to present and discuss China’s uniquely fascinating urban economy with students as they munched on take out. The Brown Bag Seminars are a great way for our students to get real insights from real business insiders in a relaxed setting. Similarly, our ‘Day in the Life’ series showcases the lives of successful international and local business leaders throughout the year, giving students a deeper understanding of what it takes to achieve top-level success. A standout event was the Shanghai installment of Hult’s Visionary Speaker series where Peggy Liu Chairperson of JUCCCE and TIME magazine’s â€Å"Hero of the Environment† shared her vision of a greener China. The Hult community was captivated by Liu’s powerful speech that spoke to people’s hearts as well as their minds. You can read about this event in detail here. The students have also done some visiting themselves, with trips to leading companies a regular on the Hult Shanghai event calendar. With 2 billion consumers using their products every day, a visit to Unilever’s Asia HQ was a great opportunity for our students to learn how a major multinational company operates. After a presentation from North Asia’s Vice President of Finance, Tony Lantham, and a tour through the Customer Insight Innovation Centre, they finished by sharing their insights over ice cream. The differences in race, gender, age, and levels of education create tensions in the work environment. Gelato Cheese Company is in such a situation. Heartland Corners has a population that is 25% African American and 50% Caucasian. Asian Americans and Hispanic Americans share the remaining percentage. The primary education requirement for the cleaning position at Gelato is a high school diploma. 75% of the Caucasians have completed high school. However, only 25% of the minority groups have a high school diploma. A look at the cleaning crew reveals that Gelato only has white cleaners. Since 25% of the minority group have high school diplomas, one should expect that 25% of the cleaning staff consists of members from that group. This is a violation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. In order to understand how Gelato violates the act, one has to know its origin and content. The Act has its origin in a bill that President John F. Kennedy introduced in a civil rights speech on June 11, 1963. In the speech, he proposed a law that gave all citizens the right to frequent facilities open to the public (Miller, Gyung-Ho, Sened, 2008). Such facilities included retail stores, theaters, hotels, and restaurants. He also called for a law that protected the right to vote. President Kennedy gave this speech following a campaign in Birmingham, in which police attacked students with pressure fire hoses and dogs for protesting against discrimination. The bill founds its way to congress. On e year later, President Johnson signed it into law and it became the Civil Right Act of 1964 (Loevy, 1990). The law banned discrimination based on sex, color, race, origin, and religion. It eliminated inequality in voter registration requirements, racial discrimination in learning institutions, and at workstations. The law also outlawed segregation in facilities that provided services to the public. The law had ten features. These included voting rights, public accommodations, desegregation of public venues, desegregation of education, non-discrimination in federal programs, and establishment of a civil rights commission (Whalen Whalen, 1985). Other features included changes in voter registration and statistics, intervention of cases involving violation of civil rights, establishment of a community relations program, and equal employment opportuneness. Title VII of the act speaks about equal employment opportunities. The section prohibits employers from practicing discriminative HR practices. Title VII bars employers from discriminating in relation to compensation, hiring, employment privileges, and discharging employees. It also makes it illegal for labor unions to base their membership on color, race, origin, and color. Title VII applies to firms with more than 15 workers, employment agencies, and labor organizations (Pedriana Stryker, 2004). Gelatoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s central plant has one hundred employees. This makes it a genuine employer (more than 15 workers). This means that the contents of the act apply to it. The absence of workers from other races in the cleaning department provides grounds for a lawsuit against Gelato. The civil rights group would argue that Gelato broke the Civil Right Act by failing to provide equal opportunities in employment. It would argue that if Gelato were an equal opportunity employer, the cleaning unit would have at least 25% of the team coming from the minority groups. A look at some cases reveals that some companies also suffered the same consequence for failing to adhere to the act. In 1971 case of Griggs v. Duke Power Co., the court rules that Duke Power Company violated the Civil Rights Act. It did this through intentional position discrimination and employer practices that affected minorities and women negatively (The Leadership Conference, 2014). The Supreme Court concluded that the power company conducted tests that disproportionately locked out African American job applicants. The court also found out that these tests had no relation to the job. In addition, the court found out that the firm had employment practices that discriminated agent African Americans (LDF, 2014). The court prompted the utility company to change its employment practices. The 1987 case of United States v. Paradise also paints a similar picture. In this case, the court found the defendant to discriminate against African Americans in promotions. It held that the employer should implement a one-for-one requirement. T his means that for every white employee that got a promotion, a competent back worker would also get one. The court held that this action would eliminate the impact of long-term discrimination in Alabama (Supreme Observer, 2013). In my opinion, Gelato should make some changes to its structure to comply with the requirements of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. The lack of minority workers in the cleaning department seems unintentional since the education requirement of a high school applies to all races. This is a disparate impact. Disparate impact involves a situation where an organization unintentionally discriminated against race or gender by using standard requirements for all applicants (Biddle, 2011). It leads to a significant difference employment results. In Gelatoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s case, it led to an all-white cleaning team. However, absence of qualified minority workers in the department signifies that the firm is on the wrong side of the act. The first step that Gela to should take to adhere to the law is applying job requirements uniformly and consistently. Even if applicants apply for a requirement that is not essential for business needs, that provision is unlawful if it excludes people of a particular race. Gelato should also institute measures to prevent illegal practices. Examples of such practices include receiving applications from one source, asking for an education background with no relevance to job performance, and testing applicants for skills that have no relation to the job. The HR department should also use affirmative action in its selection of workers. The reason for this is that white applicants are the majority. Affirmative action would ensure Gelato overcomes unintentional discrimination and complies with the act. When the firm institutes affirmative action, it should avoid classifying and segregating its employees. This means that it should avoid assigning African-Americans to predominantly black neighborhoods. For example, the African American drivers that deliver the processed cheese around the town should serve white and black areas. ADEA applies to both workers and job applicants. With regards to job advertisements and notices, ADEA makes it unlawful for firms to include age limitations and preference. The law also states that when an employer asks the applicant his age, the purpose of that information should be legal (Rodriguez Weingast, 2003). The act only allows the company to reduce benefits to older workers if it reduces benefits for young workers. An example of case law that applies to ADEA is the 1998 case of Morelli v. Cedel (Find US Law, 2008). In this case, the court stated that ADEA applies to firms that have more than 20 workers operating overseas. In the case, the plaintiff sued the defendant for failing to release her pension after she resigned. She sued the firm on the ground that it violated the IDEA by terminating her contract without paying her pension. The plaintiff argued t hat it did not qualify under ADEA since it had a workforce of less than 20 in America. However, it had other employees that worked as expatriates in foreign countries. The court decided that the number of foreign workers made the firm subject to ADEA. The 2008 Gomez-Perez v. Potter case also shows how ADEA applies. The plaintiff sued the defendant after he denied her a promotion based on her age. A look at Gelato also reveals that it is against the ADEA. The decree prevents employers from discriminating on the basis of age. It prohibits discrimination in hiring, job notices that have an age preference, mandatory retirement, and denial of benefits to senior workers. Gelato has a workforce where 85% is below 35 years. Although devastating it was not the first time workers had the task to endure the financial difficulties of an impending recession. The main focus of host countries has now shifted from one that is totally inclined to return of the refugees to one that is more considerate of the economic advantages that they come with. According to the latest EU Action Plan on Return done in 2017, during 2014-2015 just over 1 million unplanned for migrants were rejected in the European Union alone. The EU received around 2.6 million asylum applications for refugee from war torn states; below 60% were accepted in the first case, showing that maybe as many as 1 million asylum applicants could be ordered to return. According to the latest World Bank migration brief (2017) in the EU, the number of potential returnees – those denied asylum and other detected undocumented migrants – rose from 1.4 million in 2011 to over 5 million in 2016. In the United States, the stock of potential returnees rose from around 1.5 million in 2011 to 3 million in 2016. At the same time, actual return rates remain well below prescribed return line. Though not the main object of this paper, return policy also deals with large blocks of immigrants who come irregularly for family or economic reunification reasons and do not apply for asylum and further touches to the return of migrants who arrive legally but refuse to go back after their visas expire. It is important we touch on this issue as it is the employability factor that decides if the asylums seeker is accepted by the host country or not. While the paper does not presume to tackle every conceivable facet of this discussion, it does seek to provide an overview of some of the most salient and relevant issues on both sides of the conversation. Second, the research turns to the contemporary refugee crisis in Lebanon. At this stage, the paper examines the relevance of existing academic literature to the Lebanese case. The paper also briefly proposes broad policy responses for the Lebanese case that may serve to magnify the positive economic impact of refugees while mitigating the negative consequences. My strengths are that I give great attending skills, eye contact, body language and facial expressions. I know how to paraphrase, summarize and ask open ended questions. When it comes to the basic interviewing skills, I have those and I am comfortable with knowing what they are and how to present them. I show and present empathy and I pay attention to the client and ignore everything else surrounding the client to attend to the client. I enjoy the opportunity to sit with a client and discuss their problems and just to be able to share that space with them, so I am eager to perform how I feel. Knowing my weakness and strengths allows me to be relate to a variety of clients and demands cultural awareness. Integrating cultural context into my interviewing is important because every client is different and their experiences are not shared; all clients can encounter the same problem, but handle it completely differently. Integrating cultural context is about recognizing that culture contributes to a person’s experience and rather the client discloses their cultural background or not, it is important as a counselor to acknowledge there is a cultural difference. I think it is as important to ask the clients for clarity or to give an overview of their culture. This is done simply by asking questions about their upbringing and religious background. It is gathering clarity about their experiences to see how different rituals, customs etc., have influenced their life; decisions, views, values and beliefs. All these things help with the treatment plan. The treatment plan has the target and goals that the client has decided to work on as solutions for their problems. While helping clients create a target and goals is important, it is just as important for me to focus on some target and goals in my own interviewing  and counseling practicing. While I can be educated enough to apply what I have learned, it is the smooth flow of a session I want to feel when I am done with counseling skills. I want to be able to client focus in the room regardless of whose observing. I want that comfortably in relying on my knowledge to know I am doing my best and every counselor is different. Focusing on that will allow me to use my skills and be a successful counselor.

The Most Important Amendment In The Constitution Is The Fourteenth Ame

The most important amendment in the constitution is the fourteenth amendment. The fourteenth amendment was proposed by Congress on June 13, 1866 and ratified on July 9, 1868. This amendment is the section about the rights of citizens. There is five sections to the fourteenth amendment. The sections are: citizenship, apportionment of representatives, former confederate officials, public debt, and enforcement. The first section is citizenship. It says all people born or naturalized in the United States are citizens of the United States and of the state that they reside in. No state is allowed to make or enforce any laws which will take away the privileges of a citizen. No state can take away a person's life, liberty, or property without lawful reasons. Any state may not deny any person of equal protection of all laws. The second section is the apportionment of representatives. The number of representatives depends on the population of each individual state excluding the Indians that are not taxed. All people are counted equally from this point on in the census. The third section is the section about the former Confederate officials. This section deals with the pardoning, forgiving, of the leaders of the Confederate states' rebellion during the Civil War. The fourth section is the section about the public debt status. This section said that the public debt of the Civil War was legal and would be payed back. It said that the public debt of the Confederate states was illegal and would not be payed back. This was done because they didn't want the people to get their money back who tried to overthrow the government. It also said that the Confederate states would not be payed back for slave compensation. This section was the punishment for all of the supporters of the rebellion against the United States during the Civil War. The fifth section is the section that deals with enforcement. This section says that these provisions of the fourteenth amendment will be enforced. The enforcers of these provisions will be Congress. A case dealing with the fourteenth amendment is the case of Korematsu versus the Unites States. This case took place during the mid nineteen hundreds when the United States was at war with Japan. It was brought to court because a man, Korematsu, stayed in the city of San Leandro California. Korematsu was supposed to leave that area because he is of Japanese descent and the United States was at war with the Japanese Empire. The military decided to have all people of Japanese descent be relocated to another area because the city of San Leandro California is a military area. They feared disloyal Japanese citizens. The military feared invasions and espionage by the Japanese. Korematsu believed that he was being held a prisoner because of his ancestry. There was no evidence that Korematsu would be disloyal to the country. Korematsu felt that being forced to leave his home in San Leandro because of his background was a violation of his rights as a citizen of the United States. The Supreme Court justices had the same opinions about the case. They believed that this was not a case of racial prejudice. The Justices said that Korematsu was not excluded because of his race. He was excluded because the United States was at war with the Japanese empire and had to take all safety precautions. One of these precautions being move all of the Japanese citizens out of San Leandro California to prevent a West Coast invasion and espionage. They also felt that this was not a case of racial prejudice because all people of Japanese descent were ordered to be temporarily removed from the city of San Leandro, not just Korematsu. The military had to act fast and they believed that this would be a good way. The Supreme Court believes that the military's actions were not unjustified.
